Maybe the answer is to have good roads for folks who are willing to pay taxes, and shit roads that the folks who AREN’T willing pay taxes get to use. Same with bridges, etc.
Here in VA (and a couple of other states) we have Gadsten Flag license plates, mostly found on top model luxury cars. If I were less law-abiding, I would do nasty things to them. I do, however, comment to the owners when I see them at the public park. (If I get shot, you’ll know why)
The whole POINT of civilization is to work together to solve common problems. Like infrastructure.
Sorry, this is a real hot button issue for me. I’ve written about it many times before (http://fiftyfourandahalf.com/2012/07/05/the-years-of-living-dangerously/). Nobody listens, though.
As a regular reader of your blog, I’d have to add that you not only write about it, you do so very well. So I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t listen to you…

You know, one of these days, if the government doesn’t start repairing our infrastructure …
with the bridge collapses we’ve already had, I think “one of these days” is already here…
Try driving the Pennsylvania Turnpike some time. And that’s a toll road! You’d think that Pennsylvania would use the toll money to repair the damned road. Considering that a lot of it is very twisty and goes up and down through the Appalachian Mountains, for safety’s sake, you would want the condition of the road to be at least somewhat decent.
I think that the money is going to politicians’ pet projects. As are all the gasoline taxes that we pay in each state. Weren’t they supposed to be used at least in part to maintain the roads?
And the bridges! I always hold my breath when drive over a bridge. Any bridge.
