Ryan Dorm was beaten, shot at, and spent months in jail after Prince George’s County police officer Donald Taylor claimed Dorm was trying to rob a Brentwood gas station. Dorm claimed he was just passing by the station when Taylor jumped him. Taylor claimed the gun went off during a struggle when Dorm attacked him and grabbed for his gun.
Video from the gas station security camera supported Dorm’s story, so police buried it in their evidence files. Local prosecutors finally obtained a copy of the video, and have now charged Taylor with second-degree assault, making false statements, reckless endangerment, and official misconduct.
Video from the incident, filmed by a gas station’s security camera on February 3 but not released to the public until Monday, shows Cpl. Donald Taylor striking 19-year-old African-American male in the face with the butt of his handgun. The gun discharges in the man’s face right as the blow lands.
Donald Taylor was charged in August after prosecutors obtained a copy of the video. Dorm has filed a $10 million lawsuit against the officer and the department. “What [the video] shows is that my client didn’t lie,” attorney Jimmy Bell told a reporter with NBC Washington. “They print my client is a criminal. They put his face on television saying he committed these crimes, and he didn’t.”
I’m sure the fact that Donald Taylor is a white cop while Ryan Dorm is a young black male had nothing at all to do with the issue…
