There are people who just want publicity, and there are people who hate folks not like them. Joe Arpaio manages to combine both qualities in a simple-minded package. Joe is famous for pulling stunts that get him headlines, but this time he’s got a lead investigator named Mike Zullo to help him out.
Zullo said his ace-in-the-hole is an alleged telephone conversation with an “amazingly sharp” 95-year-old woman named Verna K. Lee, who worked at the Hawaiian registrar’s office where birth certificates were verified. Her signature is printed on Obama’s birth certificate.
Mike Zullo says that Lee says that there are irregularities on the form that couldn’t possibly have happened under normal circumstances. But then, Lee retired several years ago and thought she was talking to a reporter. She thought she might have been the person who filed out the form, but she couldn’t be certain.
This was the second time this year that Joe Arpaio has buffered expected bad publicity with a “sensational” press release. But his supporters say that the timing of the press conference is just a coincidence.
The Arizona Republic noted that Arpaio’s press conference comes just two days before the civil-rights case against his agency is set to begin. Arpaio, who has dubbed himself “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” is famous for attention-grabbing stunts like forcing inmates to wear pink underwear and running all-female chain gangs.
Joe, well-known for his racist policies, is claiming that he went into this project with an open mind. Fortunately, no one in the press or in politics is taking the would-be researcher seriously. Joe Arpaio: what a poody head!
