I have long urged my younger friends with young children to avoid Boy Scouts, and even Girl Scouts, and find a Camp Fire-USA program, if they can. Part of Camp Fire’s Program Philosophy states:
We invite children, youth and adults regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation or other aspect of diversity. Camp Fire USA programs are designed to provide coeducational activities for all youth. Youth find a safe and inclusive place to explore the uniqueness of who they are, to master important life skills, to share with peers and adults and to develop assets that experts assert are essential to the process of building character and maturity. We require no oath or participation in rituals that may create barriers to inclusiveness.
That’s great! Even though Daddy was a Boy Scout in his youth (back during the last Ice Age), he never told me about the Camp Fire Program. Sounds like a worthwhile organization to me.
I was a Camp Fire Girl when I was a kid (also during the last Ice Age). In those days they were only girls, but they eventually opened up to both boys and girls. They really do try hard to be inclusive. Unlike the Boy Scouts…………
