Preliminary: James Eagan Holmes, a gun-wielding 24-year-old male wearing a gas mask and a bullet-proof vest, entered through a fire exit into a movie theater in Aurora, CO (a Denver suburb, not far from Columbine High School) during a premier of the new Batman movie. He tossed in either one or two smoke or tear-gas grenades and began firing, apparently at random. Total victims announced so far = 71 (including children), with 12 dead, 59 wounded. Police captured him sitting in his car in the parking lot. They said he gave up without incident. When authorities searched the suspect’s apartment, they found several explosive booby-traps. Police evacuated the buildings surrounding his apartment while their experts disarmed the devices.
Although his motives are unknown at this time, the Internet is speculating wildly. Personally, I’m not going to believe any thing I read until the suspect makes a statement — and maybe not even then.
