
Diane Tran lives in Willis, Texas. She’s a 17-year-old honor student who’s taking advanced placement and dual credit courses at her high school. She’s also working two jobs because her parents divorced last year and both left the state, leaving Diane to take care of her younger sister and older brother alone. Because of her heavy load, she is sometimes too exhausted to make it to school on time. If she arrives after attendance is taken, she’s counted as missing the entire day.
She was warned by Judge Lanny Moriarty in April not to miss any more school. When she missed school again last week, he sentenced her to 24 hours behind bars and a $100 fine. “If you let one of ‘em run loose, what are you gon’ do with the rest of ‘em, let them go too?” the judge offered as justification.
Although Judge Moriarty didn’t know all that when he issued her punishment, after finding it out he said those facts didn’t matter. After all, rules are rules…
